Model Veronica Didusenko filed a lawsuit against the organizing committee of the National Beauty Contest “Miss Ukraine”. The case will be considered in the Pechersk District Court of Kiev, according to a press release.
In 2018, Didusenko from Kiev became Miss Ukraine-2018, she was supposed to represent Ukraine at the Miss World contest. However, four days later she was disqualified due to the fact that, as the organizers said, Veronika Didusenko provided false information before participating in the competition, stating that she was not married and had no children. According to the terms of the Miss Ukraine and Miss World contests, a participant does not have the right to do this either before the competition or for a whole year after receiving the crown.
“Imagine young mothers and girls who have lost their children, victims of rape who decided to have a child, as well as married girls and widowed women who are still not allowed to participate in beauty contests. The lawsuit I am filing against the organizers of the Miss Ukraine pageant is , with a positive result, will create a precedent for other national competitions, “she said.
According to her, her claim is not about the crown, but about the rights of the mother.
At the end of 2019, Didusenko filed a lawsuit against the organizers of the Miss World pageant. Then she explained her decision by the fact that she wants to change the existing rules and make beauty contests inclusive for everyone. “” Inclusive competitions will help break down gender stereotypes, create professional opportunities for participants and empower women. ” noted she is in conversation with the BBC.
Didusenko lost trial. The Commission for Equality and Human Rights in London found that very few women were involved in such contests, so the rules should not change. Miss World Executive Director Julia Morley said the competition rules exist to protect the well-being of children as winners are forced to work on a busy schedule.
The first Miss World beauty pageant was first held in 1951 in the UK. This year the competition is 70 years old.
