China’s President Xi Jinping has said there is no tolerance for foreign meddling in the Taiwan issue and has pledged to achieve national reunification. The comments come after a period of tension, with China sending more than a hundred military planes into Taiwan’s airspace in the space of a week.
“No one should underestimate the unwavering determination, strong will and great capacity of the Chinese people to defend national sovereignty and territorial integrity. The historic task of the total reunification of the motherland must be fulfilled, and it will definitely be done,” Xi said.
Beijing also claims that there are reports that the United States has been training Taiwan’s military for a year.
Taiwan’s President Tsai Ing-wen reacted to the comments and said Taipei “will not bow down” to pressure from Beijing and that China cannot determine Taiwan’s direction.
While China claims that Taiwan is part of its territory, the island claims to have independence and seeks recognition from international bodies and other nations. The United States often sells military equipment to Taiwan, an issue that is often a source of tension between Washington and Beijing.
