Employees of the Uzbek service of Radio Liberty – Radio Ozodlik, before the presidential elections in the country, receive numerous threats. About it reported on the website of the publication.
It is noted that on October 16, in just 30 minutes, dozens of messages with threats and insults to journalists and their relatives appeared on the telegram channel of the Uzbek Service. The messages contained threats of murder and sexual violence and were accompanied by pornography. Some comments said that “Ozodlik’s real goal is to organize a rebellion in Uzbekistan, disrupt the peace and discredit the president.”
Threats came from anonymous accounts, but journalists found out that at least two messages were written by accounts promoting pro-government policies on social networks.
Jamie Fly, president of the Radio Free Europe / Radio Liberty media corporation, called the threats against the Uzbek service “disgusting” and called on Tashkent to immediately end intimidation tactics against independent media.
The website of the Uzbek Service of Radio Liberty has been blocked in Uzbekistan since 2019.
Presidential elections in Uzbekistan are scheduled for October 24. The CEC registered five candidates, including the incumbent head of state Shavkat Mirziyoyev.
