Partially recognized Republic of Kosovo sends two Russian diplomats. This was announced on Friday by the President of Kosovo, Viosa Osmani. Russia does not recognize the independence of Kosovo from Serbia and, accordingly, has no diplomatic relations with the republic. In Prishina, however, the office of the Russian Embassy in Serbia operates. The Kosovo authorities call it “the liaison office of the Russian Federation in Kosovo”.
The Russian Foreign Ministry has not yet commented on the expulsion of diplomats.
In recent weeks, the situation has escalated in the predominantly Serb regions of northern Kosovo, where clashes have occurred between representatives of the local population and the special forces of the Kosovo police, as well as on the border between Serbia and a republic whose independence Serbia does not recognize.
Most of the UN member states recognize the independence of Kosovo, proclaimed in 2009, but it is not recognized by the two countries of the UN Security Council (Russia and China), as well as Serbia and several EU countries.
