Street vendors at Largo da Carioca, in downtown Rio de Janeiro, protested on Wednesday (27) against the removal of street vendors from their workplace as part of the actions of the “Reviver Centro” bill of Mayor Eduardo Paes (PSD).
More than a month ago, the workers were removed due to the implementation of the program that promises to revitalize and transform part of the region into a residential area. The category claims that the City of Rio does not have a project that contemplates the permanence of street vendors in Largo da Carioca.

According to the coordinator of the Unidos do Camelô Movement (MUCA), Maria de Lurdes do Carmo, the City Hall promised to release the authorization for the return or offer a new location for the street vendors, but did not comply. The Military Police dispersed the demonstrators who occupied the tracks of the VLT Carioca this Wednesday (27).
“Once again, without an answer from the City Hall, the street vendors here at Largo da Carioca, who are tired of being pulled over by the government, demanding a solution. People have been out of work for a month, in need, because the City Hall did not fulfill the agreement”, said Maria dos Camelôs, as she is known, during the protest.
To Brazil in fact, the Municipal Secretariat of Public Order of Rio de Janeiro (SEOP) informed that there is a waiting list of street vendors seeking regularization and relocation in downtown Rio.
“The process is being evaluated by the Urban Control Coordination, which is looking for suitable locations for the allocation of these street traders”, says the text.
