Parque Madureira, located in the north of Rio de Janeiro, is now called Parque Mestre Monarco. The decree to change the name came from Mayor Eduardo Paes (PSD) and was published in the Official Gazette of the municipality this Thursday (16).

The park’s new name, one of the biggest in the capital, is a tribute to composer Hildemar Diniz, Monarco, who died last Saturday at the age of 88. He had been hospitalized since November 21 at Hospital Federal Cardoso Fontes, where he underwent bowel surgery and underwent complications.
The samba artist was a composer, singer, harmony director, aggregator and unique character in the history of Grêmio Recreativo Escola de Samba Portela, the most successful of all Rio schools. In all, there were eight decades of dedication to samba.
Monarco performed several shows at Parque Madureira. In 2015, he shared the stage with Paulinho da Viola to pay homage to Cartola in a presentation by the Timoneiros da Viola group, which brought together around 50 thousand people. The party was also attended by Tia Surica and the bulwarks of Velha Guarda da Portela.
