Dam breaks in the south of MG and causes damage to pasture and road

A dam dam broke this Friday (14) in the rural area of the municipality of Ouro Fino, in the south of Minas Gerais, reaching a region of forest and pastures. According to local authorities, the rupture also damaged a nearby road.

The episode also affected a bridge that is on the border with the municipality of Inconfidentes and ended up being interdicted by the city’s Civil Defense. According to the police, there are no injuries. The incident took place on private land and the owner was not found by agents who were at the unit.

According to the Civil Defense, the rupture of the dam caused the Mogi Guaçu River to be above the normal level, but the situation has now been rectified. The Military Environmental Police (PMMA) highlighted that the site of the rupture had been inspected in September 2020, when problems were found in the construction of the dam.

The PM points out that, at the time, a notice of infraction was drawn up and the unit ended up being embargoed. Public bodies are still investigating issues related to this Friday’s breakup.

“It is also worth noting that on the date of the first inspection there was no considerable accumulation of water in the dam. The incident is in progress to investigate other environmental crimes that may have occurred, because in the places where the water passed, there is still a certain accumulation preventing the access of the garrison”, pointed out the PMMA.

According to Agência Minas, a news portal maintained by the state government, Minas Gerais has 31 emergency-level dams. The Public Ministry of Minas Gerais (MPMG) and the State Environmental Foundation (Feam) are currently working on reports on the case.
