The city of Rio de Janeiro started, on the morning of this Monday (17), the childhood vaccination against covid-19, but the 33 thousand doses of the immunizer Pfizer, sent by the Ministry of Health, are not enough to vaccinate all children of 5 to 11 years in the capital of Rio de Janeiro and should only last until next Tuesday (18).
The amount of immunizations received corresponds to only 6% of what is needed to vaccinate the 560,000 children who live in the municipality. The expectation of the prefecture is that the Ministry of Health send more doses of the vaccine that arrived in Brazil this Sunday (16). Another 33,000 doses are needed to meet the calendar for this week alone.

Child vaccination against covid-19 started with 11-year-old girls, then it will be the turn of boys of the same age. The calendar follows in order of age from oldest to youngest and is scheduled until February 9th. Children will receive two doses of the immunizer 8 weeks apart.
Children with disabilities and/or comorbidities are preferred and can be vaccinated even outside the designated day for their age.
Vaccination points
Starting this Monday (17), 11 school units will be used as child vaccination posts against covid-19. The initiative is from the Municipal Department of Education of Rio (SME) and aims to increase immunization sites and encourage parents and guardians to vaccinate children.
Children’s books will also be donated to students who get vaccinated. To carry out the action, more than 20 thousand copies were donated by publishers and the National Union of Book Publishers (SNEL), which should guarantee distribution in the first days.
SME asks that anyone who can contribute to the campaign send an email to the Folder Reading Management [email protected] or delivered to schools that are vaccination points.
Vaccination in schools does not interfere with the daily lives of students and staff, as the current period is school holidays with a face-to-face return scheduled for February 7th.
