The police of the Turkestan region announced the arrest of five suspects in the attempted murder of journalist Amangeldy Batyrbekov, the Kazakh service of Radio Liberty writes. On the night of January 4, 2022, in the city of Saryagash, Turkestan region, near the house of Batyrbekov, unidentified people shot and wounded his son Dinmukhamed. Batyrbekov linked the attack to his journalistic activities. Suspects of involvement in the shooting were detained – these are people detained near the journalist’s house, as well as the alleged mediator and “customer” of the crime. The police identified the latter as an official, a resident of the city of Saryagash. According to investigators, he “ordered” the journalist for five million tenge ($11,468). Investigators opened a criminal case under the article on attempted murder. The suspects were taken into custody with a court order, police said. According to some reports, Baurzhan Mairikhov, the head of the education department of the Saryagash district, is suspected of being the mastermind of the crime. On January 21, the personnel department confirmed that Mairikhov was not at the scene “in connection with the placement in custody,” the Kazakh service of Radio Liberty points out. It was not possible for journalists to confirm the information in court about his arrest. The journalist told the publication that his son’s condition is normal and he has been discharged from the hospital. He linked the attack to two posts on his Facebook page. One of them tells about the work of a kindergarten in Saryagash and mentions the name of the head of the regional department of education Mayrikhov. In 2021, three judges of the Turkestan Regional Court filed a libel suit against Batyrbekov for his Facebook posts. The investigation into this case is not over yet. In 2020, Batyrbekov was repeatedly brought to trial on charges of “slander” and “insult”. He was then acquitted. In 2019, the head of the education department of the Keles district of the Turkestan region, Bakhtiyar Abdiev, sued Batyrbekov for “insulting”. In this case, the court of the Saryagash district sentenced Batyrbekov to two years and three months in prison, but the Turkestan regional court overturned the verdict of the district court and acquitted the journalist. .
