Peskov said that the abduction of Yangulbaev’s mother is a “fantastic story” and the Kremlin prefers not to believe such reports

Press Secretary of the Russian President Dmitry Peskov commented on the kidnapping of the mother of the lawyer of the “Committee against Torture” Abubakar Yangulbaev Zarema Musaeva from an apartment in Nizhny Novgorod.

The incident took place on the evening of January 20. Unidentified men in civilian clothes, as reported by the “Committee against Torture”, came to the home of a retired judge of the Supreme Court of Chechnya, Saidi Yangulbaev. They introduced themselves as police officers and stated that a certain fraud case was being investigated in Chechnya, according to which they were being summoned for interrogation. They did not dare to touch Saydi Yangulbaev because of his status as a judge, they took Zarema Yangulbaeva away. The police called to the scene arrived three hours later, the prosecutor’s office did not accept a statement from human rights activists in Nizhny Novgorod, by phone to the FSB “Novaya Gazeta” declaredthat “it can’t be.”

Peskov said that the Kremlin would not try to deal with this incident, since, according to him, this is not their prerogative. He believes that if “some statements” were submitted to the police, then the police are already working.

“In general, a fantastic story. We prefer not to believe just such reports without any confirmation. We live in too untrue times,” – leads his words to radio “Mayak”.

Press Secretary of the President asked about the special status of the Chechen security forces who took Zarema Yangulbayeva away. “Police officers must work strictly in accordance with job descriptions, with departmental instructions. These are not some kind of sovereign units. We are a single country, we have the Ministry of Internal Affairs, other special services, and within this framework everyone should work. About something else out of the question,” he replied.

Abubakar Yangulbaev is a lawyer at the North Caucasian branch of the human rights organization “Committee Against Torture”. At the end of December, he reported about the abduction in Chechnya of about 40 of his relatives, then he himself was detained as a witness in a criminal case under the article on justifying terrorism, and later he was released. During the interrogation, he was asked questions about his involvement in the telegram channel of the opposition movement 1ADAT. Earlier, the head of Chechnya, Ramzan Kadyrov, announced the involvement of the Yangulbaev brothers in this channel. Abubakar Yangulbaev says he has nothing to do with him.

Employees of the human rights organization “Committee against Torture” (CPT) on January 21 reported that they had sent an urgent complaint to the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) under rule 39, which is applied when urgent legal assistance is needed in cases where “the life and health of a person is threatened by an imminent risk of irreparable harm.”
