President of Kazakhstan Kassym-Jomart Tokayev dismissed Bakytzhan Sagintayev from the post of mayor of Almaty in connection with “transition to another job.”
Yerbolat Dossaev, who served as chairman of the National Bank, became the new mayor. Prior to that, he worked as Deputy Prime Minister, Chairman of the Board of the Baiterek National Holding.
Residents of Almaty demanded in their petition to dismiss Sagintaev from the post of mayor. The petition with such an appeal to the president at the time of publication of the note was signed by over 26.5 thousand people.
“Sagintayev did not pass the most important test in his life – he did not support either morally or physically the townspeople in difficult days for the city. He did not simply go on air with an appeal to Almaty residents. We did not see him in the public field until January 8. This is disastrous late,” the appeal says. “Our disappointment with the actions and inaction of the current akim of the city is systemic.”
Bakytzhan Sagintayev was appointed mayor of Almaty in 2019, before that he led the presidential administration, served as secretary of state and prime minister.
