The Russian authorities have asked China to provide military equipment to support military operations in Ukraine. They write about it Finanсial Times, The New York Times And The Washington Post with reference to US officials. According to them, Moscow has been asking Beijing for military equipment and other assistance since the beginning of the military invasion of Ukraine.
According to Financial Times sources, Russia is running out of some types of weapons by the middle of the third week of the war. The New York Times notes, citing its interlocutors, that Russia has also asked China for additional economic assistance to counter the effects of economic sanctions.
How China reacted to Russia’s request is not reported. Beijing has taken a neutral stance on the war in Ukraine and has not condemned Moscow for the invasion, but called for a negotiated settlement.
The White House fears that Russia’s request is a sign of increasingly close ties between Beijing and Moscow. Also, a positive Chinese response could undermine Western efforts to help Ukraine.
“We have told Beijing that we will not stand by and will not allow any state to compensate Russia for losses from economic sanctions,” US national security adviser Jake Sullivan said on CNN.
The Chinese Embassy in Washington said it had no knowledge of Russia’s request.
On March 14, U.S. National Security Assistant Jake Sullivan and Yang Jiechi, member of the Politburo of the CPC Central Committee, will meet in Rome.
“This meeting is taking place in the context of Russia’s unjustified and brutal war against Ukraine, and in connection with the fact that China has teamed up with Russia to promote its own vision of a world order,” – writes Politico, citing its source.
The White House noted that they made it clear to Beijing that it would be overtaken by very serious consequences if China tries to help Russia compensate for losses from Western sanctions.
