The European Union adopted the fifth package of sanctions against Russia. About it informs EC press service.
Sanctions from August 2022 prohibit buying, importing or transferring Russian coal to the EU. Now coal imports to the EU are estimated at 8 billion euros per year.
A ban on the entry of Russian ships into European ports has also been introduced. The restrictions do not apply to humanitarian aid and the supply of agricultural and food products.
Cargo transportation across the EU territory to road transport operators from Russia and Belarus, including transit (with the exception of medicines and food), is prohibited.
The EU announced a ban on operations and freezing of assets of “four key Russian banks”, as well as sanctions against oligarchs, businessmen, officials and “supporters of disinformation and manipulation of information.” 217 people and 18 companies have been added to personal lists. Basically, these are the authorities of the so-called “DNR” and “LNR”. The full list will be published later in the EU Journal.
Additional export and import restrictions have been introduced.
“These sanctions were adopted in the wake of the atrocities committed by the Russian armed forces in Bucha and other places under Russian occupation. The purpose of our sanctions is to stop the reckless, inhuman and aggressive behavior of the Russian troops and to make it clear to decision makers in the Kremlin that their illegal aggression costly,” said EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell.
In addition, the British Foreign Office turned on in the sanctions list of the daughters of Vladimir Putin Katerina Tikhonova and Maria Vorontsova, as well as the daughter of Sergei Lavrov Ekaterina Vinokurova.
After it became known about the massacres of civilians in Bucha, a number of Western countries tightened sanctions against Russia. The US has imposed restrictions on Russian politicians, two major banks and Vladimir Putin’s daughters. The UK has decided to stop importing Russian coal and oil by the end of this year.
