In Belarus, 35 orthopedists were detained in a criminal case on taking bribes. Such a figure voiced Alexander Lukashenko at a meeting with Health Minister Pinevich, Prosecutor General Andrei Shved and KGB head Ivan Tertel.
Previously, the number of detained doctors was estimated at about 50 people, but no one reported the exact information. This is the first time that the authorities have acknowledged mass arrests of doctors, almost a month after the first cases. Lukashenka called the arrests an “operation”. According to him, he “very well” knew “the course of this operation”, as he “controlled” it.
“It didn’t start today, it didn’t start yesterday. I warned the Minister of Health about this. But today there are 35 people. And I’m sure that no one will dissuade me of this, that these are not all those who should sit next to them there. people lying on the operating table, which imported orthopedic parts to insert into their body, and decently they received bribes from foreigners for this. transmits words of Lukashenka Belarusian state agency BelTA.
He also toldthat among the detainees was a doctor who “more than once” examined him: “I am very upset by this fact, but the law is the law.”
Reports of the detention of orthopedic traumatologists appeared in March. Published by Mirror.io. wrote that on March 26, from 25 to 50 traumatologists were detained. Relatives of one of the detainees said that a case had been opened against the doctor under part 2 of article 430 of the Criminal Code – “taking a bribe repeatedly, either by extortion, or by a group of persons by prior agreement, or on a large scale.”
On April 13, information appeared about the detention of three more people. According to Zerkalo.io, the orthopedists were detained under article 430 of the Criminal Code, “Taking a bribe,” and the case itself is connected with the supply of endoprostheses.
Earlier, in an interview with the Belarusian service of Radio Liberty, coordinator of the Belarusian Medical Solidarity Fund Rustam Aizatulin named the actions of the security forces “by ostentatious activities aimed at showing that the security bloc is still needed in Belarus.”
“All of a sudden, for some reason, all orthopedic traumatologists in Belarus turned out to be corrupt and scoundrels, although the procurement system of the Ministry of Health led to this,” Aizatulin added.
