On the air for 26 years, the Rádio Livre program has just left the programming of Rádio Universitária FM, in Fortaleza. The cancellation took place after the presenter and director of the radio, the professor of the Journalism course at the Federal University of Ceará (UFC), Nonato Lima, was removed from his position.
According to him, the fact happened because he did not accept the attempts to censor the programming. According to the professor, this was not the first time that the Ceará Research and Culture Foundation (FCPC), linked to the UFC and maintainer of the radio, tried to impose restrictions on the freedom of the vehicle.
Nonato says that the president of the Foundation had already tried to ban political analysis and the performance of African-origin music. These restrictions were not admitted by the director: “At the end of last year there was a change in the direction of the Foundation. The then vice-president, who is now the president, took over, Professor Paulo Aragão. In the first meeting we had, at the end of last year, he made a series of observations about my program Rádio Livre, which has been on the air for 26 years, and about the radio program. Which, in my view, characterized censorship”, he points out.

The professor and broadcaster reports that the Foundation again made more severe recommendations, which he again refused to comply with: “Now, months later, about thirty days later, he resumed the story, including a speech of verbal violence that doesn’t even deserve to be mentioned, imposing the censorship clearly. [Disse] that the Rádio Livre program should either fit into what he thinks journalism is, or go off the air, that the debate programs we have could not be the way they are. It went so far as to suggest the interference of the Foundation itself in the direct production of the program, which I immediately contested, once again resumed the criticism and the attempt to censor the musical programming”.
Check VT of the matter
Nonato also says that he promptly refused to agree with any of the impositions made in this bias to radio programming: “I would not direct the radio for the political purpose of imposing censorship. In addition to being hateful and undemocratic, it is also unconstitutional. Democracy is not made with censorship. Of course, there was a feeling of discomfort and he then threatened to file a lawsuit within the scope of the Foundation’s Board of Trustees, supposedly for some illicit act that I would be committing in fulfilling this line of programming that has been the line of radio for 40 years. So I told him to open the processes he thought he should, but he would be opening a process to denounce illegal acts that do not occur, or have occurred and that would not occur”.
The president of the Foundation would have taken the matter to the rector of the University. “Faced with the attempt to intimidate, or impose this censored programming and identified with the current practices of Brazilian politics that are in power, he set out to remove me from the direction of the station. because it is the rector who appoints the director of the radio. Yesterday afternoon I went to a meeting with the rector for him to formalize what I already knew, that I was going to be removed from the direction of the radio”, narrated Nonato Lima.
This Wednesday (18), after a meeting with the dean that made official the removal of the Professor from his duties on the radio, Nonato Lima received the solidarity of students, teachers and servers, as well as professor Kamila Fernandes, who reinforces how difficult it has been. for the entire academic community to follow situations like this.
“Watching something like this, a more direct intervention in an equipment as important as Rádio Universitária, this space that has always protected freedom of expression, the defense of minorities, the defense of human rights, of plurality, all of this absurdly taking into account the journalistic ethics, watching this now is a very difficult situation. This attempt to intervene to prevent critical journalism and bring negationist elements, including anti-science, is absurd to think about in a university environment”, he vents.
The teacher also highlights the important work that has been carried out on the radio for years: “Professor Nonato Lima worked for many, many years on the radio. He had a very traditional and critical program in relation to the policy being implemented in the country and he resisted, resisted while he could. We are by his side, in solidarity, and we will remain alert to preserve our heritage, which is Rádio Universitária, which does not belong to the administration of the Rectory, it belongs to the community, to society”.

The Journalism Course and the Graduate Program in Communication (PPGCOM) of the Federal University of Ceará (UFC), as well as the Union of Journalists of Ceará (Sindjorce) published a note of repudiation of the attempt to censor university radio. , as emphasized by the President of Sindjorce, Rafael Mesquita.
“The broadcasting of the Federal University of Ceará was attacked by censorship mechanisms, by a group of people who forgot what the role of public power is, they forgot what the role of public institutions is. They forgot the role of the public university and the commitment that an institution like UFC has with the ethical and professional goals not only of journalism, but also of broadcasting. So we leave here our repudiation of this situation”, said Rafael.
There are other reports of censorship and intervention in the UFC
Complaints of persecution and censorship have been accumulating within the UFC since Professor Cândido Albuquerque took over as the Dean in 2019. Even with only 5% of the votes and ranking last in the consultation of the academic community, President Jair Bolsonaro (PL) nominated for the post.
The secretary general of the Union of Teachers of the Federal Universities of the State of Ceará (ADUFC-Union), Helena Martins, told our report about the climate of persecution in the academic environment: “We at ADUFC have repeatedly received a series of denunciations of teachers and teachers because of this situation. Teacher who had, due to a criticism on a social network, a lawsuit filed against her. Also professors who are directors of UFC units and who, for expressing criticism of the conduct of the current dean, Cândido Albuquerque, had their grades reduced in internal evaluations. There are several situations that have shown that this logic of persecution, of not living with the contradictory, having a practice of actually smothering dissonant voices, unfortunately marks the daily life of the institution”.
O Brazil de facto contacted the UFC Rectory. Through the press office, it was informed that it will not comment on the cancellation of the Rádio Livre program. Regarding the other allegations of persecution, he stated that he would need to know exactly which cases would be in order to issue an official position. Until the closing of the article, we had no response from the Fundação de Cultura Fundação Cearense de Pesquisa e Cultura (FCPC), also linked to the UFC.
