In Turkmenistan, the mother of President Serdar Berdimuhamedov Ogulgerek Berdimuhamedova appropriated honorary title “Honored Carpet Weaver of Turkmenistan”. This decision was published in the government newspaper “Neutral Turkmenistan”.
The title of mother of the president was awarded for her merits “in strengthening the independence and sovereignty of Turkmenistan, developing the national art of carpet weaving, decorating carpets with magnificent patterns and many years of hard and conscientious work, professional skills” at the request of the Turkmencarpet state association.
In the document, Berdimuhamedova was named one of the skilled carpet weavers who “made a worthy contribution to the development, improvement, communication to future generations of the Turkmen art of carpet weaving, glorification throughout the world of the glorious development of our sacred Motherland through carpet gels (patterns) created by skillful hands.”
Eleven other carpet weavers were awarded the same title along with Berdimuhamedova.
The honorary title “Honored Carpet Weaver of Turkmenistan” is conferred on the eve of the Turkmen carpet holiday, which has been celebrated on the last Sunday of May since 1991.
The general public in Turkmenistan is still unaware of simple facts about the former first lady and mother of the current president, Ogulgerek Berdimuhamedova: how old is she and what does she do. Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov did not take his wife on foreign trips. Official Turkmen publications have never published a photo of Berdimuhamedova before, for the first time her photo appeared in the media only last year.
