The Broad Consumer Price Index (IPCA) closed the month of May at 0.47%, a drop in relation to the result of April (1.06%). In the year, the official inflation index accumulates a high of 4.78% and, in the last 12 months, of 11.73%. In May 2021, the variation had been 0.83%.
According to the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE), eight of the nine groups of products and services surveyed showed price increases in the month. The biggest increase in prices occurred in the “clothing” group, with an increase of 2.11%.
The “Transport” group had a rise of 1.34%, a deceleration in relation to the previous month (1.91%). Even so, it was the group with the greatest impact on the general index, influenced by the expressive rise in airline tickets, which rose 18.33% in May, due to the increase in fuel and demand. Still in transport, the IBGE highlights the impact caused by the increase in bus tickets in Aracaju (5.75%) and in taxi fares in São Paulo (41.51%) and Fortaleza (14.10%).
Food goes up less
The prices of the “Food and Beverages” group also increased less, registering a rise of 0.48% in May, compared to 2.06% in April. The only group to show a drop was Housing (-1.70%). The result is mainly due to the deceleration of food at home, which changed from 2.59% in April to 0.43% in May.
Some products fell in price, such as tomatoes (-23.72%) and potatoes (-3.94%). Year-to-date, however, many still register high prices, as in the case of carrots, whose price decreased in May (-24.07%) but recorded a high of 116.37% in 12 months.
On the other hand, the biggest increases were registered in long-life milk, whose price increased by 4.56% and already accumulates a 28.03% high in the year, and in onions, which increased by 21.36% in the month of May.
In regional terms, the biggest increase in prices was registered in Fortaleza, where the index reached 1.41%, followed by Salvador (1.29%). The only capital to show a decline in prices was Vitória (-0.08%).
Also calculated by the IBGE, the National Consumer Price Index (INPC) rose 0.45% in May, below the previous month (1.04%). The index accumulates an increase of 4.96% in the year and 11.90% in the last 12 months, below the 12.47% observed in the 12 immediately previous months. In May 2021, the rate was 0.96%.
