The cause of botulism is more often home-made canned meat, fish, less often vegetables, dried or smoked products in case of non-compliance with the relevant requirements for harvesting.
In the Odessa region in the city of Yuzhny, a 37-year-old man with botulism was hospitalized in serious condition. About this on Thursday, June 16, reported in the state institution Odessa Regional Center for Disease Control and Prevention of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine.
A patient born in 1985 said that on June 9 he ate homemade duck meat stew. The man’s condition worsened on June 13. He developed abdominal pain, weakness, dry mouth, double vision, blurred vision, and ptosis.
The victim was hospitalized by ambulance to the intensive care unit of the Odessa Infectious Diseases Hospital, where doctors diagnosed him with botulism.
At the hospital, the man was injected with anti-botulinum serum. Now he continues treatment.
Doctors noted that in 2021, four cases of botulism were registered in the Odessa region, one of them was fatal.
Botulism is an infectious disease that occurs as a result of poisoning with toxins from botulinum bacteria. The disease is accompanied by severe damage to the central and autonomic nervous system.
The cause of botulism is more often home-made canned meat, fish, less often vegetables, dried or smoked products in case of non-compliance with the relevant requirements during the preparation, processing or storage of the product. Also, the cause of the disease may be the consumption of dried or smoked fish and smoked meat products (sausages, ham, etc.).
Botulism cannot be identified by color or taste: the microorganism that causes the disease does not spoil food. Potentially dangerous are all canned foods that have been poorly washed, improperly or insufficiently thermally processed, transported or stored improperly. Even canned food, in which everything is in order with the expiration date, appearance and taste, can be contaminated.
Symptoms of botulism can appear both 2 hours after eating contaminated foods, and much later – even after 4 days. These symptoms include:
- nausea, vomiting and other signs of damage to the digestive system;
- visual impairment;
- severe dry mouth;
- weakness and increased fatigue;
Doctors urge residents of the region not to eat suspicious canned food, and at the first sign of malaise, immediately consult a doctor.
Cases of botulism are recorded in the capital.
