Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev called the “DNR” and “LNR” quasi-state territories. He said this while answering questions during a plenary session at the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum, where Russian President Vladimir Putin was also present.
Tokayev said that an open society has developed in Kazakhstan, in which different opinions are expressed about the “special operation” in Ukraine.
According to him, the two main principles of the UN Charter – the right of the nation to self-determination and the integrity of the state – came into conflict with each other. “But in general, it has been calculated that if the right of a nation to self-determination throughout the world is realized, then instead of the 193 states that are now members of the UN, more than 500 or 600 states will arise on Earth. Of course, it will be chaos. For this reason, we will not we recognize neither Taiwan, nor Kosovo, nor South Ossetia, nor Abkhazia. Apparently, this principle will also be applied to quasi-state territories, which, in our opinion, are Luhansk and Donetsk. This is a frank answer to your frank question, “said he.
The rejection of the separatist “DPR” and “LPR” was previously announced by Timur Suleimenov, First Deputy Head of the Presidential Administration of Kazakhstan. He said that Kazakhstan respects only those decisions that are made at the UN level. Moreover, Suleimenov noted that his country will not be a tool to circumvent sanctions against Russia by the US and the EU.
Later Tokaev in his article for The National Interest, he wrote that Kazakhstan and Russia maintain a special relationship of bilateral cooperation, but at the same time, Kazakhstan recognizes the territorial integrity of Ukraine – like the vast majority of countries in the world.
