Safronov, who at that time worked as an adviser to the head of Roskosmos Dmitry Rogozin, was arrested on July 7, 2020 on charges of treason. According to the FSB, he allegedly collaborated with the Czech intelligence services and provided them in 2017 with data on the supply of weapons from Russia to African countries and information on the activities of the Russian Armed Forces in the Middle East. However, it is not known exactly what information was transmitted. Rogozin, for his part, declaredthat Safronov did not have access to classified information in Roskosmos. Safronov himself does not admit guilt.
Safronov’s defense has repeatedly noted that it is not clear from the case what exactly the journalist is accused of. In “Team 29” in March 2021 indicatedthat several months have passed since the preventive measure was chosen, but “the investigation has not presented the court with any evidence of suspicions against Ivan, or documents confirming that Ivan can hide somewhere.”
