The parties must define their candidacies by August 5th, but with a week to go before the legal deadline, the electoral scenario in Rio Grande do Sul still contains several uncertainties. The main one concerns the candidacy for the State Executive by the left slates. Specifically, between the Workers’ Party (PT) and the Brazilian Socialist Party (PSB).
The PT must confirm state deputy Edegar Pretto to run for state government for the Brazil Federation of Hope, made up of PT, PCdoB and PV. Former governor Olívio Dutra (PT) should also be nominated to run for the Senate. However, it is not yet known who will be the runner-up on the ticket with Pretto. The PT tries to bring the PSB into the composition.
In the midst of these negotiations, an information war surrounded the PSB state directory this week. The party had defined at a convention that Beto Albuquerque would be a candidate for the state government. However, the Newspaper, for example, took Beto Albuquerque’s withdrawal for granted, stating that the PSB would support the PT in the electoral dispute for the Gaucho Executive. The article also stated that the source of this information would be the national president of the PT, federal deputy Gleisi Hoffmann (PR). The declaration caused great discontent among PSB cadres in the state.
Contrary to what I said Sheet, in a statement sent to the Rio Grande do Sul press, Gleisi herself denied having given the information to the São Paulo vehicle. She lamented what she called a “malicious interpretation of news for which I have not provided any statement or information”.
Beto Albuquerque also denied the version of Sheet, ensuring that nothing was discussed internally in this regard. On Twitter, she wrote that she was going to Brasília to attend the PSB Executive meeting and the Party’s national convention, which ends this Friday (29).
PSB/RS sets a meeting for Monday
However, in the late afternoon of Thursday (28) again, another vehicle in the mainstream press takes the retreat for granted. The globe published “Beto Albuquerque gives up the dispute for the government of RS”. Brasil de Fato RS sought advice from the candidate, who did not confirm the information.stating only that “the pre-candidate for governor of RS, Beto Albuquerque, scheduled a meeting with the State Executive of PSB/RS for Monday (1), at 11 am, when decisions about the next election will be taken”.
However, the atmosphere of the conversations seems to be more difficult for the composition. In official note signed by the state president of the PSB/RS, Mário Bruck, the party repudiated what it called an “arrogant gesture by the national president of the PT of wanting to speak on behalf of the socialists”, even though Gleisi denied that she was the source of the article in the Sheet. In this way, the party still maintains its pre-candidacy for the government and reaffirms its non-coalition with the PT in the state.
PSOL may reopen discussion on Executive
The state PSOL held its convention on the 24th, appointing Pedro Ruas, councilor from Porto Alegre, as a candidate for state government, with professor Neiva Lazzarotto as vice, in addition to Roberto Robaina as a candidate for the Senate. However, the party reopened discussions with the PT after Olívio Dutra entered the Senate race.
Through Twitter, Porto Alegre councilor Matheus Gomes, who is a member of the legend’s state directory, stated that “with the entry of Olívio Dutra in the dispute, most of the PSOL returned to consider unity with the PT and PCdoB here in the LOL!”
GOOD NEWS! With the entry of Olívio Dutra in the dispute, the majority of the PSOL returned to consider the unit with the PT and PCdoB here in RS!
It’s a huge step forward! I have been defending this policy in the PSOL for months. There is no condition for a 2nd turn between Onyx and Milk. It’s unity now!

Brasil de Fato RS contacted state deputy Luciana Genro, state president of the acronym, who confirmed that there was a debate. She informed that a possibility is being stitched around the candidacy for the Senate. On the issue of the candidacy for the Gaucho Executive, she only reported that the debate “is open”, but that there is no news so far.
Survey gives prevalence to right-wing candidates in RS
A survey published in Correio do Povo and commissioned by Record TV showed a preference for right-wing candidates for the Rio Grande do Sul executive. The survey, carried out by the company Real Time Big Data, shows former governor Eduardo Leite (PSDB) and former minister Onyx Lorenzoni (PL) technically tied in spontaneous questioning, with about 14% and 12% preference each, respectively. . José Ivo Sartori (MDB) also appeared in the spontaneous poll with 2% of the voting intentions, followed by Edegar Pretto (PT), with 1%. The survey also states that 7% of respondents intended to vote blank or null, and 61% did not know or did not respond.
However, in the stimulated poll, Leite (PSDB) appears with 20% of voting intentions, followed by Onyx (PL), with 17%. Also included Pretto (PT) with 9%; Pedro Ruas (PSOL), with 5%; Luís Carlos Heinze (PP), 4%; Beto Albuquerque (PSB), 3%; and Vieira da Cunha (PDT), 2%. All other pre-candidates obtained 1% of the intentions each. In the race for the Senate, the leadership also belongs to the right-wing candidates. They lead Hamilton Mourão (Republicans), with 24%, and Ana Amélia Lemos (PSD), with 20%. In the poll, however, the name of Olívio Dutra was not included.
The survey heard 1500 voters from RS, between the 26th and 27th of July. The survey was registered with the TSE under the number RS-04275/2022, with a confidence level of 95%, with the margin of error responsible for changing the results by up to 3 percentage points.
Party conventions will set the stage for the dispute
Several parties will make their conventions in the next few days. On Saturday (30), it will be the turn of the PDT, the PP and the PSTU.
The PDT has already launched Vieira da Cunha as a pre-candidate for the state government and should confirm his name in a meeting scheduled for the City Council of the capital. The PP must formalize the nomination of Senator Luis Carlos Heinze for Piratini and the councilor of Porto Alegre Comandante Nádia for the Senate, at the Dante Barone Theater. The PSTU, which presented Rejane de Oliveira as a pre-candidate for the government and Fabiana Sanguiné for the Senate, will meet at the headquarters of the CPERS/Union.
On Sunday (31), the PTB, allied with the PP, should indicate the name of the psychologist Tanise Sabino to run as Heinze’s deputy. The MDB still has parts of the party working to support ex-governor Eduardo Leite (PSDB), while the majority tends to confirm state deputy Gabriel Souza for the state government. The PSDB will make Leite official to run for state government. His deputy may leave the MDB or União Brasil.
Expectations also surround the PT convention, at the Ritter hotel: the party has not yet defined the vice president and is working to offer the PSB the vacancy. There are also expectations for the composition of the collective candidacy for the Senate, headed by Olívio Dutra.
