The PL, the party of President Jair Bolsonaro, is the party with the highest number of police candidates, there will be 232, a number that represents 13% of the total of 1,866 names linked to the security forces.
The survey was carried out by the Brazilian Public Security Forum (FBSP), which used data from DivulgaCand, the Superior Electoral Court’s (TSE) candidacies registration system. According to information from the agency, there are 1,866 police candidates in 2022, an increase of 27% compared to 2018.

Right-wing parties concentrate 94.9% of police candidacies. In addition to Bolsonaro’s PL, PTB (14) and Republicans (137) pull the list. On the other spectrum, the participation of security forces professionals in left-wing acronyms dropped. In 2018, it was 2.9%. Now, in 2022, it will only be 1.4%.
Among the states, Rio de Janeiro leads the list, with 251 police candidates, followed by São Paulo, which accumulates 238, and Minas Gerais, which will have 126 names linked to the security forces.
Military police are the majority among candidates. In all, there will be 807 active names. Of these, 245 are renovated. Then appear the civil police, with 188 competitors.
In the regiment of the Military Police, it is foreseen that after ten years the agents can leave the position to run in elections, without prejudice to the loss of the post.
