Former Secretary of Planning of Paraná during the Requião government, and elected federal deputy, Paraná-born Enio Verri was nominated by President Lula to take charge of the Itaipu hydroelectric plant, a position that had several names linked to the Workers’ Party in Paraná ventilated, such as that of the former governor Roberto Requião, and the former Minister of Communication, Paulo Bernardo.
On social media, Verri thanked Lula for nominating him. ”I feel honored that President Lula chose my name to take on this new mission. Itaipu has a very important role in the planning of the Brazilian government, which is to promote and finance actions that bring economic, technological and social advances to Paraná and Brazil. And, still, to be a vector of modernization and democratization of the energy sector”. Verri even participated in the transitional government, assisting in the diagnosis in the Planning area, and was quoted to assume a post in the federal government.

He will have ahead of him negotiations on Annex C of the Itaipu treaty, a document that deals with the conditions for commercializing the energy generated at the binational hydroelectric plant, which should take place in the coming months. According to the treaty, Brazil is entitled to 50% of the plant’s 14,000 MW of power, having to buy around 30% from Paraguay for the same price, since the neighboring country does not have the same demand on the Brazilian side, for the use of all the energy from the hydroelectric plant.
The nomination also coincides with the visit of the PT-Paraná state president, Arilson Chiorato, to President Lula, this afternoon at the Alvorada Palace, where, in addition to investments for the state, the toll concession contract agreed between the Ratinho Jr. and former president Jair Bolsonaro. The choice of a name more closely linked to the PT and not the democratic front could create mishaps for Governor Ratinho, since the state depends on funds from the hydroelectric plant to complete works in the region of Foz do Iguaçu, such as the duplication of a stretch of the BR- 277 and West Contour. At the end of his thanks on his social networks, the new director of Itaipu stated ”I’ve been in the PT for 40 years and I’ve always defended that collective interests prevail over individual interests. And today, this collective project is the reconstruction of Brazil. And Itaipu is part of this great project”.
