O Brazil in fact launches this Friday (27th) the documentary “Terceiro Ato”, a production that marks the 20th anniversary of one of the main vehicles of popular communication in the country.
Directed by reporter José Eduardo Bernardes, the documentary portrays the events that marked the emblematic month of January 2023, from the historic inauguration of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) to the coup acts carried out by supporters of Jair Bolsonaro (PL) – who destroyed the headquarters of the three powers of the republic.
“Just as the inauguration was historic, the 8th of January also entered history, obviously in a sad way, which is related to a Brazil that we will have from now on, a Brazil in dispute”, points out Bernardes.

“We saw that the reflection of this was an even greater power of the forces of democratic institutions that reacted instantly and did not let the coup d’état and radical ideas take over the country”, he completes.
The plot follows the saga of President Lula’s supporters heading to Brasília, leaving different regions of the country. It also covers the backstage of the organization of the inauguration, highlighting the security strategies and the approximation of the ceremony with the Brazilian people.
“Since the first day, on the 30th, what you could feel in Brasília was that it was a city occupied by a sea of people, a sea of red. The feeling of living this experience was fantastic”, highlights the director.
Bernardes analyzes that in addition to the symbology of the whole “ritual” of the first of January, there was also a very high expectation for Brazil to change course.
“There was a lot of pressure, both from civil society and from institutions for the previous government to actually end. We had several problems in relation to Jair Bolsonaro’s management. And Lula was resignifying the position of the presidency even before to take over.”
The production of Brazil in fact features exclusive interviews with ministers of state in the current government, such as Flávio Dino (Justice and Public Security), Paulo Pimenta (Secretary of Social Communication), Paulo Teixeira (Agrarian Development) and Esther Dweck (Management and Innovation).
The film also gives voice to the characters who participated in the delivery of the presidential sash to Lula, such as the boy Francisco Carlos do Nascimento e Silva, the influencer and anti-capacitist activist Ivan Baron, and the collector and director of the Central de Cooperativas de Materials Recyclables of the DF and Surroundings (CENTCOOP-DF) Aline Sousa.
“The inauguration, as it was, having broken several protocols established, many of them during the period of the Military Dictatorship, has become historic. A President of the Republic who goes up the ramp of the Planalto Palace accompanied by people representing the most diverse civil society and receiving the presidential sash from a waste picker. It was very emotional”, completes Bernardes.
popular view
Monyse Ravena, Audiovisual coordinator at Brazil in fact, considers that the story of Lula’s inauguration can be told from many perspectives. And what differentiates this production from the others is the choice to tell from a popular point of view.
“We show a popular view of the third inauguration of President Lula, but also a popular view of the coup attempts that marked the month of January. It is a dialogue about the return of the greatest popular leadership in Brazil within a context that we continue coexisting, in which part of the neo-fascist ultra right tries to delegitimize the popular choice. So the documentary also shows this tension”, analyzes Ravena.
The film will be presented at the opening of the panel “Participatory Democracy and Social Control” this Friday (27), within the schedule of the 2023 World Social Forum, based in Porto Alegre (RS).
O Brazil in fact was launched at the World Social Forum on January 25, 2003, in a historic ceremony. A pioneering journalism initiative organized by Brazilian popular movements was born. On that day, 7,000 people filled the Araújo Viana Auditorium, in Parque Farroupilha, in Porto Alegre, for the launch.
