The Union of European Football Associations UEFA moved the venue for the Super Cup match in 2023 from Kazan to the suburbs of Athens. The decision was announced on the official website of the organization on January 25.
The venue for the final was chosen back in 2020. The match was scheduled for August, it was supposed to be held at the Ak Bars Arena stadium. Instead, he moved to the stadium “Karaiskakis” in the city of Piraeus, closely adjacent to Athens.
Following the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, UEFA and FIFA suspended Russian clubs and national teams from international competition and allowed foreign players and coaches playing in Russia and Ukraine to suspend club contracts.
Moscow considered the possibility of moving from the European Football Association to the Asian one, but the issue was later postponed indefinitely.
