Azerbaijani Deputy Foreign Minister Khalaf Khalafov said that Baku had repeatedly demanded to ensure the security of the embassy, which was attacked on January 27, but the Iranian authorities ignored these appeals. It is reported by Turan.az.
Azerbaijan, he said, informed Tehran about the threats against its diplomatic missions. “We demanded from the authorities to strengthen security measures. The incident that took place the day before yesterday shows that Iran ignored these demands,” he said.
The attack on the Azerbaijani embassy in Tehran took place on January 27. A man armed with a Kalashnikov assault rifle killed the head of the security service of the diplomatic mission, Orkhan Askerov, and wounded two other guards. The attacker was arrested.
Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev called the attack a “terrorist act” and demanded “punishment of the terrorists.”
On January 29, employees of the embassy in Iran and their families were taken to Baku. Khalafov said that the embassy in Tehran had suspended diplomatic activities. Now there are five employees who will guard the administrative building and the property of the embassy.
The Azerbaijani consulate in Tabriz continues to operate, where Azerbaijani citizens in Iran can apply.
