Thanks to one donor in Lviv, save five patients
The man had a stroke. When doctors declared brain death, his relatives agreed to donate organs to save other people.
In the First Medical Association of Lviv, lungs, a heart, two kidneys and a liver were transplanted from a posthumous donor. Thus, it was possible to save five people, giving them a chance for a full life. This was reported by the press service of the First Territorial Medical Association.
The donor was a 54-year-old man, a resident of the Lviv region, who had a stroke. Doctors declared brain death, so the native men agreed to donate his organs to save other people. The doctors are sincerely grateful to the donor’s family for the decision.
Lungs – for the first time in Ukraine without the help of foreign colleagues, were transplanted to 56-year-old resident of Kiev Alexei, the liquidator of the accident at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant, who is raising an 8-year-old son. Operation was successfully completed.
“Our team performed a historic operation. The operation lasted 16 hours, the lungs were transplanted due to a mini-access and without using a heart-lung machine. It became the second lung transplantation in Ukraine from a posthumous donor. Our doctors performed the previous one together with the Poles in September 2021. The patient feels themselves perfectly,” the First TMO notes.
The donor heart was received by 48-year-old Alexander from Transcarpathia. Due to an illness, his heart could not pump blood, so without a donor organ, he had no chance of life.
The liver was transplanted to another resident of Transcarpathia, 50-year-old Valery. He had cirrhosis, which caused viral hepatitis C.
Kidneys were received by 47-year-old Ivan from Transcarpathia and 44-year-old Lyubov from the Carpathians. Both suffered from chronic glomerulonephritis.
By the way, last year a record number of transplants were carried out in Lviv, saving almost a hundred Ukrainians in Ukraine. The medical teams of the First Medical Association transplanted seven hearts, 12 livers and 78 kidneys: children received three kidneys and one liver.
Let us recall that earlier it was reported that Kyiv and Lviv remain the Centers for the Development of Transplantation in Ukraine, but 32 medical institutions of the country can already carry out organ transplantation.
