Two more deputies were involved in the corruption scandal in the European Parliament. DW reports.
The Parliamentary Committee for Justice on Tuesday, January 31, unanimously voted to open criminal proceedings against Social Democrats Mark Tarabella from Belgium and Andrea Cozzolino from Italy. This issue will be finally resolved at the plenary session of the European Parliament on February 2. Earlier, the Belgian justice authorities petitioned for the deprivation of both parliamentarians of parliamentary immunity. Tarabella is suspected of receiving financial benefits from Qatar, and Cozzolino was also allegedly under the financial influence of Morocco. Both suspects deny the allegations.
Law enforcement officers during the course of investigative activities in December searched the private premises of Mark Tarabella. Francesco Giorgi, one of the main figures in the corruption scandal in the European Parliament, worked for Andrea Cozzolino until recently.
Georgie, along with three other defendants, is currently in pre-trial detention. Among the defendants is his life partner Eva Kylie, who was removed from the post of Deputy President of the European Parliament. Belgian justice authorities accuse them of corruption, belonging to a criminal group and money laundering. During the investigation of the scandal, authorities have already confiscated 1.5 million euros.
Recall that the police confiscated 1.58 million euros in cash during searches in the European Parliament in the case of corruption around the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
Eva Kylie was arrested on charges of corruption in favor of Qatar. Together with her, the Belgian police detained several more people.
