The search service of the Yandex company blocked the issuance of images of Russian President Vladimir Putin for offensive requests. This is reported by the Meduza publication, whose journalists studied the company’s source codes that were in the public domain.
“When you search for pictures in Yandex, in some cases your search query is automatically corrected: the company removes some of the images from the search results,” the publication notes.
Words and phrases in which “Yandex” will not issue images of Putin include: “the main thief”, “bunker grandfather”, “bald”, “x**lo in the hole”, “d**don of all Rus'”, search the request “when he dies”, “a strange creature waves his hand” and others.
In addition, according to Meduza, Yandex “protected from unpleasant associations” the letter Z, which is applied to Russian military equipment participating in a full-scale invasion of Ukraine, and which has become a symbol of support for the war.
At the same time, Meduza emphasizes that it is not known exactly when Yandex introduced censorship on the issuance of images of Putin and to what extent it works. Journalists note that they managed to find images of the Russian president in Yandex search for all queries except “x** in a spacesuit.”
Last week, unknown people made public the source code of Yandex services, as well as archives of the company’s internal repository. Yandex acknowledged the large-scale leak and has already published the first results of its own investigation of what happened, which, in particular, states that the leak contains an outdated version of the code that differs from the current one.
