Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan
Erdogan called the condition for supporting Sweden’s application to NATO, recalling the incident with the burning of the Koran in Stockholm.
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan recommended that Sweden “not make empty efforts” on its way to NATO. He stated this at a meeting of the parliamentary faction of the ruling Justice and Development Party of Turkey in Ankara, Anadolu reports.
“As long as actions like the burning of our sacred book, the Koran, are sanctioned in Sweden, we will not say yes to Stockholm’s application to join the Alliance,” Erdogan said.
According to him, unlike Sweden, Ankara’s attitude to Finland’s application is positive.
“Our attitude to Helsinki’s application is positive, but to Sweden’s appeal – negative. Therefore, empty efforts should not be made in Stockholm,” the Turkish president said.
Recall that Turkey, against the background of the action in the Swedish capital of Stockholm with the burning of the Koran, decided not to support Sweden’s application for membership in NATO.
It was also reported that Erdogan threatened Sweden with a “shocking” message. He stated that Ankara could agree to Finland’s application for NATO membership earlier than Sweden’s.
