Ursula Fond der Leyen impressed by Ukraine’s progress towards EU accession
Ukraine, which is still at war, is amazingly able to deliver the necessary results to move forward, said Ursula von der Leyen.
Speaking about the process of Ukraine’s accession to the EU, President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen noted that there are no clear time frames, but there are goals that need to be achieved. She spoke about this during a joint press conference with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Friday, February 3.
“This is a process that should be beneficial to everyone. There are no clear time frames, but there are goals that the candidate member must achieve. And after that, accession negotiations and the entry itself begin,” said von der Leyen.
The head of the EC noted that each country has its own history of joining the EU, there are no common patterns. Ukraine, which is also at war, is amazingly able to deliver the necessary results to move forward, she said.
“If you look at the history of the EU, it all started with six members, and today we are 27. There were 21 different accession histories, with different negotiations and accession. There is no one option for everyone. It all depends on how the candidate country is moving. I am deeply impressed, and I want to note the quality and speed with which you provide results. It’s phenomenal,” said von der Leyen.
