The European Union announced the mobilization of emergency assistance to Turkey after the devastating earthquake. This is stated in a joint statement by EU High Representative Josep Borrell and European Commissioner for Crisis Management Janez Lenarcic.
“This powerful earthquake is one of the strongest in this region in more than 100 years… And in response, the European Union has mobilized rescue and search teams following Turkey’s request to activate the EU Civil Protection Mechanism,” the statement said.
Rescue teams from Bulgaria, Croatia, the Czech Republic, France, Greece, Hungary, Malta, the Netherlands, Poland, and Romania have been mobilized. Spain and Slovakia also offered assistance to Turkey. The EU Emergency Response Coordination Center is in contact with the Turkish authorities to coordinate further assistance.
In addition, the European satellite system Copernicus is used for emergency cartographic support of rescue operations in the regions affected by the earthquake.
“The EU stands ready to support the victims in Syria, where there are also reportedly casualties, through humanitarian assistance programs… Our thoughts are with the bereaved and the courageous rescuers who are working to save lives,” the joint statement said.
Recall, the embassy urged Ukrainians in Turkey to be vigilant.
