An earthquake of magnitude 7.4 hit the southeast of Turkey in the province of Kahramanmaras. The tremors were felt in neighboring countries. Hundreds of buildings collapsed. In Turkey, according to preliminary data, at least 76 people were killed in seven provinces, AP reports citing the Emergency Situations Agency. In Syria, a total of at least 119 more people were killed.
Seismologists note that this could become one of the most destructive earthquakes in Turkey in recent times.
The earthquake occurred in the Pazardzhik region in the province of Kahramanmarash at a depth of 7 km at 04:17 local time (coinciding with Moscow), the State Emergency Management Department said. The magnitude of the fluctuations was 7.4 points, follows from the data of the Turkish Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD).
Later, three more earthquakes with a magnitude of 6.4 to 6.6 occurred in the province of Gaziantep. Also, seismologists recorded 22 aftershocks.
Turkish Interior Minister Suleyman Soylu said that the earthquake was felt in ten provinces, including Kahramanmarash, Gaziantep, Hatay, Osmaniye, Adiyaman, Malatya, Diyarbakir.

At least seven people were killed in Osmaniye province.
An eight-story building collapsed in Diyarbakir province, killing six people.
At least 16 houses collapsed in Sanlıurfa province. At least 10 people were initially reported dead. Then their number grew to 15.
In Adana, three high-rise residential buildings were completely destroyed.
At least 23 people were killed, 420 were injured in the Turkish city of Malatya, and 140 buildings were destroyed.
In connection with the natural disaster in Ankara, an emergency center was organized in the building of the State Emergency Department.
The head of the Turkish Interior Ministry said that the highest level of alarm was announced in the republic. It provides for international assistance. Rescue crews were sent to the southeast of the country from other regions of the republic to extract people from the rubble.
The earthquake affected neighboring countries of Turkey. In Syria, the aftershocks resulted in the destruction of several buildings in the province of Hama. In the north of the country, railway communication has been stopped, the state of roads and bridges is being checked. The Syrian Ministry of Health reported 42 dead and 200 injured due to the earthquake. Later it became known that the number of victims exceeded 100 people.
Seismologists from the National Center for Geophysical Research in Bhannes said that strong ground vibrations were felt in many parts of Lebanon, including the capital Beirut and the Bekaa Valley. The tremors from the earthquake in Turkey were also felt in Baghdad.
