At least 125 aftershocks of magnitude 4.0 or more have occurred since the 7.8 magnitude earthquake hit southern Turkey on Monday morning.
“The frequency and strength of aftershocks are decreasing, as expected, as we get further away in time from the original earthquake. However, aftershocks between 5.0 and 6.0+ are still possible and carry the risk of additional damage to structures affected from the initial quake. This poses a constant threat to rescue teams and survivors.
The shocks stretch for more than 400 kilometers along a fault zone in southern Turkey, oriented from the southwest to the northeast and stretching from the Mediterranean Sea off the northern coast of Syria to the province of Malatya.
Recall that on February 6, two powerful earthquakes occurred in the southeast of Turkey: in the Pazardzhik region of Kahramanmarash province – a magnitude of 7.7 and in the Elbistan region of the same province – 7.6 on the Richter scale.
President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has declared a state of emergency for three months in 10 provinces of the country.
Later it became known that 4,544 people died in Turkey, another 26,721 were injured.
