From September 1, 2023, the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church is switching to a new style for holidays with fixed dates. This was decided by the synod of the UGCC, according to the website of the church. The statement said that this change was requested by many believers.
“In particular, the Nativity of Christ is on December 25, Theophany is on January 6, the Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary is on March 25, the Protection of the Most Holy Theotokos is on October 1, St. Nicholas is on December 6,” the UGCC said.
Parishes that are not yet ready to take this step will be able to celebrate fixed-time holidays in the old style until September 2025. Easter and all related holidays of the UGCC in Ukraine will be celebrated in the old style, as before.
A 2022 poll showed that more than half of Ukrainians planned to celebrate Christmas on January 7th. At the same time, the number of people who did it only on December 25 increased. Also increased the number of Ukrainians who celebrated Christmas on both dates – December 25 and January 7.
In 2022, the Orthodox Church of Ukraine allowed the dioceses to hold services on Christmas Day on December 25.
The Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church is the third largest after the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the Moscow Patriarchate and the autocephalous Orthodox Church of Ukraine.
