Professor at the Faculty of Economics at the Federal University of Bahia (UFBA), Uallace Moreira Lima, is the new Secretary for Industrial Development, Commerce, Services and Innovation at the Ministry of Development, Industry, Commerce and Services (MDIC).
The nomination was published in the Official Gazette this Wednesday (8). The economist’s announcement on Geraldo Alckmin’s team, who heads the MDIC, had been made by the vice president himself on January 24, through a publication on social networks.
“Uallace Moreira will be MDIC’s Secretary of Industrial Development, Commerce, Services and Innovation. Professor at the Faculty of Economics at the Federal University of Bahia (UFBA), Uallace is one of the greatest Brazilian scholars on the industrial sector, having actively participated in debates on the design of the new ministry during the transition of government,” he wrote.

Before taking office, Uallace was in Korea, as a visiting professor at the Capes Print program at UFBA. In November last year, he was invited to join the transition team, which formulated the proposal for building the new MDIC.
Uallace granted an interview to Brazil in fact, published in October last year, shortly after the election of President Lula (PT). In the article “Hunger, work and a spending ceiling: Lula’s first economic challenges”, the economist says that “it is inconceivable that a country like Brazil has 33 million people going hungry”.
In an interview with the UFBA website after Alckmin’s announcement, the economist said that his main challenge in the PT government is to “strengthen the productive structures” in Brazil to “reindustrialize the country”.
“It is a challenge of national interest, that of re-industrializing Brazil, a State challenge. I hope to contribute to this mission of a state, a country, a nation, which is to industrialize, strengthen its productive structures so that Brazil reaches a higher stage of economic development and, in fact, its status as a great nation materializes”, said
Uallace Moreira Lima is an adjunct professor at the Faculty of Economics at UFBA. He works in the area of International Economics, Economic History and Brazilian Economy, with emphasis on studies on the Brazilian and South Korean Foreign Sector, Brazilian and South Korean Industrial Development. He has been a consultant for the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), a visiting scholar at the Institute for Research in Applied Economics (IPEA), and a visiting scholar at the Korea Institute for International Economic Policy (KIEP).
