Zelfira Tregulova left the post of director of the Tretyakov Gallery “due to the expiration of the employment contract.” The new head of the museum will be Elena Pronicheva, who has headed the Polytechnic Museum since 2020, Interfax writes.
The change in the head of the Tretyakov Gallery took place after the Ministry of Culture demanded that the museum report “on the issue of bringing the content of the gallery’s permanent exhibitions and exhibitions in line with spiritual and moral values.”
The reason for the check was the complaint of a visitor to the museum, Sergei Shadrin, who considered the exposition of the Tretyakov Gallery to be contrary to the state policy “to preserve and strengthen traditional Russian spiritual and moral values”, set out in a decree of the President of Russia dated November 9, 2022.
Shadrin found works, in his opinion, “having signs of a destructive ideology.” As such, he attributed a number of works by artists of the second half of the twentieth century, in which there are scenes of funerals, “drunken alcoholism” and “voluntaristic interpretations.” In particular, he mentions the polyptych “The Last Supper” of 13 parts, emphasizing that he could not understand who Judas was in these paintings – presumably, it is about the cycle “The Last Supper” by the famous Russian artist Natalia Nesterova.
The Ministry of Culture said that Pronicheva will have to “preserve the best experience of saving the museum’s funds and continue the development of the State Tretyakov Gallery and its branches, including within the framework of the cultural, educational and museum complexes being created.”
Zelfira Tregulova has been in office since 2015.
