Powerful earthquakes can happen on the territory of Ukraine. The most active shocks with an intensity of 8 are possible in the southwest of the Odessa region. This was announced by the seismologist of the National Academy of Sciences Alexander Kendzera, TSN reports.
He explained that earthquakes are possible in Ukraine, because it is located in the same seismically active zone as Turkey. This seismically active belt constantly generates tremors. The seismologist added that earthquakes depend on how fast the plates move, which in turn leads to the accumulation of energy.
“This belt was formed due to the fact that the Eurasian plate is pressing on the Arab and African plates. Obviously, the movement of these plates cannot be stopped, so sooner or later there will be earthquakes,” he said.
The seismologist remembered the Vrancea zone, located in Romania. An earthquake on this seismically active plate can be felt throughout Ukraine. Local seismically active zones were recorded near the Crimea and Transcarpathia.
It should be noted that the United States is moving the George Bush aircraft carrier stationed in the Mediterranean Sea closer to Turkey to help eliminate the consequences of a devastating earthquake.
