Russian invaders committed many war crimes in Ukraine
A search is now underway for the best ways to organize a tribunal based on the evidence collected, explained European Commissioner Didier Reynders.
The International Center for the Investigation of Russian Crimes in Ukraine in The Hague (Netherlands) will begin work in July this year. Member of the European Commission for Justice Didier Reynders said this at a briefing with Prosecutor General of Ukraine Andriy Kostin in Brussels, Interfax-Ukraine reports on Friday, February 17.
“Many countries have already begun their investigations into war crimes, but we are also working on the crime of aggression and the launch of an international center for the prosecution of the crime of aggression against Ukraine in The Hague. It is attached to a joint investigation team, which includes six countries and Ukraine. The purpose of the center will be to preserve evidence and collect it for future courts. We have already given this competence to Eurojust, as well as to create a new database that will be operational soon,” said Reynders.
He noted that the process of collecting evidence is very important for the further transfer of evidence to the court.
“We are looking for the best ways to organize a tribunal based on the collected evidence,” the European Commissioner explained.
The next step will be to seek the jurisdiction of the Special Tribunal requested by Ukraine, or another tribunal.
“We are open on how to work on this,” Reynders said.
He noted that a lot of war crimes are committed in Ukraine and one must be sure that “the criminals will be accurately punished, and they will be afraid to appear before a tribunal all their lives.”
Recall, on February 2, the head of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, announced that an international center to investigate the crime of aggression of the Russian Federation would be created in The Hague.
Earlier, Western partner countries supported the creation of an international tribunal for Vladimir Putin. They came to the conclusion that the place of the current president of the Russian Federation is in front of the international criminal court.
