US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken
The US Secretary of State met with the Chinese Foreign Minister and discussed Chinese intelligence balloons and warned of the consequences of Russian assistance.
US State Department Secretary Anthony Blinken met with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi on the sidelines of the Munich Security Conference on Saturday, February 18, the State Department press service said.
It is noted that Blinken during the conversation said that the flights of Chinese balloons in the sky of the United States should never be repeated again and called their launches an irresponsible act. He also made clear that China’s high-altitude reconnaissance balloon program had been exposed.
The head of the State Department also warned his colleague about the consequences if China provides material support to Russia or assistance in circumventing systemic sanctions due to the war in Ukraine. The US Secretary of State also confirmed that the US policy towards China has not changed and stressed the importance of maintaining peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait.
“The United States will compete and defend values and interests. At the same time, we do not want conflict with China and are not looking for a new cold war,” Blinken said during the meeting.
The Secretary of State also stressed the importance of maintaining diplomatic dialogue and open lines of communication at all times.
Recall that in early February, the US military shot down a Chinese balloon, which was considered a spy balloon.
As reported, the discovery of the balloon caused a diplomatic crisis, as a result of which US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken canceled a trip to China.
