US agrees additional aid to Turkey and Syria
The funds will be used to purchase and distribute basic essentials such as blankets, mattresses, food kits, warm clothes, tents and shelter materials.
The United States will provide an additional $100 million in aid for the earthquake relief in Turkey and Syria. The US is providing $100 million in addition to the already approved $85 million. This was announced on Sunday, February 19, by the US State Department.
Half of the funds, namely $50 million, will come from the Emergency Fund for Refugees and Migrants, the rest of the humanitarian assistance will be provided through the State Department and the US Agency for International Development.
“This humanitarian assistance will be directed to vulnerable earthquake-affected populations in Turkey and Syria,” the State Department said in a statement.
The funds will be directed, in particular, to assist non-governmental organizations working in Turkey and Syria.
The statement said the money will be used to purchase and distribute basic necessities such as blankets, mattresses, food kits, warm clothes, tents and shelter materials. In addition, they will be used to buy medicines, provide the victims with clean drinking water, and part of the funds will go to education support programs for children and youth affected by the earthquake.
The total amount of US humanitarian assistance in support of the earthquake relief in Turkey and Syria will be $185 million.
More than 40,000 people have died in Turkey as a result of the February 6 earthquake, with neighboring Syria reporting more than 5,800 deaths, according to the latest figures.
