Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev accused the Iranian authorities of involvement in the attack on the country’s embassy in Tehran on January 27.
“We demand a transparent investigation. The fact that the terrorist gave interviews to the Iranian media after the attack indicates his connection with representatives of official circles,” Turan quoted him as saying.
Aliyev said that the Iranian authorities should conduct an investigation and punish not only the terrorist, but also those “representatives of the official circles who sent him.” “Without this, it is impossible to talk about the normalization of our relations with Iran,” he added.
Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Nasser Kanaani called on Baku to avoid bias and politicized statements about the attack on the diplomatic mission.
According to him, “all aspects of this bitter incident are being considered and investigated carefully and in a specialized manner,” and Iran is ready to share the results of the investigation with the Azerbaijani side.
The attack on the Azerbaijani embassy in Tehran took place on January 27. A man armed with a Kalashnikov assault rifle killed the head of the security service of the diplomatic mission, Orkhan Askerov, and wounded two other guards. The attacker was arrested. Aliyev called the attack a “terrorist act” and demanded “punishment of the terrorists.”
On January 29, employees of the embassy in Iran and their families were taken to Baku. The embassy in Tehran has suspended diplomatic activities, leaving five employees there who guard the administrative building and property.
Azerbaijani Deputy Foreign Minister Khalaf Khalafov said that Baku had repeatedly demanded to ensure the security of the embassy, but the Iranian authorities ignored these appeals.
