The musical show Molière, which walks between tragedy and comedy, will be presented in Brasília from this Thursday (23rd) at the Banco do Brasil Cultural Center (CCBB) until March 12th. Actor Matheus Nachtergaele gives life to the character Molière, the playwright who is the father of western comedy.
“Molière – A musical comedy by Sabina Berman” narrates the conflict between the ways of thinking about the world based on masks, one smiles at everything and everyone and the other shows reverence and fear in the face of pain and death. The epic clash between the two sides of life takes place in the royal court of Louis XIV, in France.
Marked by comic experiences on television, Matheus Nachtergaele points out that this is the first time he tries the genre in a theatrical play. “All my theatrical work is tragic. I was very used to doing comedy for television, mostly. But he had never been a comic actor for the stage. I had never been live with people to make them smile. I’m starring in a comic show, and not just that, representing the playwright who is the father of western comedy. It’s a challenge”, emphasizes the artist.
“I discovered the pleasure of making people laugh. And if I had a prejudice against comedy because of my background, it was definitely banned. Not only for the experience, but also for confirming that laughter is a very important and healing catharsis, as it happens in live theater. This meeting to laugh and cry in the face of our amazement at life, which comes to confirm that tragedy and comedy are Siamese twins. You can’t do comedy without the intuition of the tragic and you can’t do tragedy without a sense of humor”, highlights Matheus, the show’s protagonist, who also stars with actor Elcio Nogueira Seixas, who personifies tragedy through the poet Jean Racine.
The entire show is packed with songs by Caetano Veloso, with original arrangements by maestro Gilson Fukushima. The work belongs to the renowned Mexican playwright Sabina Berman and has a cast of 15 people. “It is a very lively show. Lots of people working during the show. It’s 2 hours and 20 minutes of play. It’s a musical. The music is live. The band is on stage”, informs Matheus Nachtergaele.

Before arriving in Brasília, the musical was in Recife (PE), São Luís (MA), Rio de Janeiro (RJ) and Fortaleza (CE). After the season in the country’s capital, he will head to Belo Horizonte (MG).
Matheus also comments that he is happy and excited to present the play in Brasilia, as he believes it will be remarkable to return to the city with democracy fully reinstalled. The play, written by Mexican Sabina Berman, uses the story of Molière’s life and his rivalry with the tragic to reflect on several aspects.
Some of them are in full force in our contemporary Brazil. For example, how the State and art relate throughout history, how they are organized according to their interests, and mainly, how the church interferes negatively in decisions in a country that should be secular. Interference from the clergy removed Molière from court. The faithful burned down his theater. By watching the play, it will be possible to make a connection between these events in our country, including the unfortunate riot of January 8th”, reports Matheus Nachtergaele.

Synopsis
The illustrious playwright Molière (Matheus Nachtergaele), master of Comedy, and the rookie epic author Jean Racine (Elcio Nogueira Seixas), wage a tragicomic struggle, full of trickery and twists, for dominance of the stages of the court of Louis XIV, the Sun King (Josie Antello). The fanatical Archbishop Péréfixe (Renato Borghi), a war enthusiast, takes advantage of the conflict between the artists to banish the Theater itself from the kingdom, introducing an era of censorship, violence and sacrifice in the country. A myriad of characters from the aristocracy, the plebs, the clergy, the army, the taverns and the platforms parade through palaces, churches, concert halls, brothels and battlefields. Maestro Lully’s (Fábio Cardoso) orchestra cradles this tumultuous 17th-century France with the tropical touch of songs from Caetano Veloso’s songbook.
