Canada extends sanctions against Russia over war in Ukraine
Ottawa timed the anniversary of the full-scale war with new sanctions against the Russian Federation, which will affect a number of Russian officials and departments.
Canada introduces new sanctions against Russian officials and departments, and also prohibits the export of certain chemical components to Russia. On Friday, February 24, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced this at a briefing.
“We are announcing new sanctions against Russia against 129 individuals and 63 legal entities, including deputy prime ministers of Russia, ministers, officials of the Russian presidential administration, Russian military involved in the production of artillery and weapons used in Ukraine,” he announced. .
The Government of Canada has already published a sanctions list, which, among others, includes the wife and son of former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev, Deputy Prime Minister Tatyana Golikova, Putin’s aide Maxim Oreshkin, Speaker of the Federation Council of the Russian Federation Valentina Matvienko, and others.
Sanctions have also been imposed against both chambers of the Russian parliament, the Main Directorate of the General Staff of the Russian Federation, the Federal Security Service, the company that operates the occupied Zaporozhye nuclear power plant, the United Russia party, and others.
“We also ban the export to Russia of certain chemical components used in the production of electronics,” the Canadian prime minister added.
Trudeau also promised to transfer four additional Leopard 2 tanks to Ukraine.
In addition, Canada announced on February 24 that it will provide Ukraine with $32 million in additional security assistance.
