Biden reveals what he warned Chinese leader Xi Jinping about
Biden promises that the US will “respond” if China supplies Russia with lethal weapons, but “does not expect” China to do so.
If China supplies Russia with lethal weapons for the war against Ukraine, the US will respond with tough sanctions. This was stated by US President Joe Biden in an interview with ABCNews.
At the same time, Biden noted that he does not expect Beijing to take such a step, although it may consider such a possibility.
“I don’t expect – we haven’t seen it yet, but I don’t expect a big initiative from China to provide arms to Russia,” Biden said.
He stressed that if China did send weapons to Russia, the US would respond with tough sanctions.
“It would be the same limit that everyone else would have crossed. In other words, we imposed severe sanctions on everyone who did this,” Biden said.
The US president also detailed a conversation he had directly with Chinese leader Xi Jinping last summer, where he warned him of the economic implications of Russian bailouts.
Biden said he recalled how 600 US corporations left Russia, “from McDonald’s to Exxon – all over the place,” adding: “And I said, ‘And if you’re participating in the same kind of brutality, supporting the brutality that’s going on,’ I said: “You may face the same consequences.”
Recall that earlier CNN reported that China is leaning towards sending weapons to the Russian Federation. The final decision has not yet been made, but negotiations between Moscow and Beijing on the price and volume of equipment are ongoing.
Recall that President Volodymyr Zelensky said he was doing everything possible to prevent the supply of Chinese weapons to Russia. He said this at a press conference on February 24.
