A day care center under construction in Rondonópolis (MT) will be named after Arthur, grandson of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT), who died at the age of 7 in 2019, a victim of a bacterial infection. The news moved the Chief Executive, who received the information during the delivery of houses from the Minha Casa Minha Vida program, this Friday morning (3).
The announcement was made by the mayor of Rondonópolis, Zé Carlos do Pátio (PSB). Arthur was the son of Sandro Luis Lula da Silva and Marlene Araújo Lula da Silva, grandson of Lula and Marisa Letícia, who died in 2017. During the speech by the head of the municipal Executive, the President of the Republic was moved to tears.
“I was authorized by Mrs. Janja. The daycare is named after Arthur Lula da Silva. I wasn’t going to say that, no. I know the pain of a grandfather, who was there in Curitiba and had to see that. President Lula, you are strong, you are a very important guy for us”, said the mayor of the municipality of Mato Grosso, mourning the child’s death.

Arthur died of meningococcal meningitis at the age of 7. At the time, Lula was released by Justice to accompany the wake in São Bernardo do Campo, in ABC Paulista. Before, the child even visited Lula twice at the Federal Police Superintendence in Curitiba, Paraná.
“Why do people starve?”
In a speech of just under 15 minutes, Lula questioned, in an important region for Brazilian agribusiness, the scenario of hunger and food insecurity. He cited an episode recorded in Cuiabá, in July 2021, during the pandemic, when dozens of families went to the front of a butcher shop to look for bones and meat scraps to eat. The scene repeated itself several times.
“Mato Grosso has the biggest cattle breeders, it is one of the biggest grain producers in the country and there is a woman receiving a bone to make soup at home. It is inexplicable, in the country that is the third largest producer of food on the planet, the largest producer of animal protein in the world, to have 33 million people going hungry,” said the president.
“Brazil produces enough food for the people. Why do people go hungry? Because they don’t have money to buy the necessary food. If they did, they would find it in the supermarket”, stated Lula.
The president also mentioned the massacre that took place in Sinop, 503 km from Cuiabá, at the end of February and killed seven people – including a 12-year-old teenager in a bar. The killers didn’t accept losing money pool games. “We see on television, every day, people attacking people, at the supermarket, at the airport, at the mall. The country was taken over by violence because lies and hatred dominated. Brazil is no longer fraternal, ”he said.
