A court in Kirovsk has arrested a tenth grade student of gymnasium No. 166 in St. Petersburg, accused of trying to set fire to the military registration and enlistment office, the press service of the Investigative Committee for the Leningrad Region reports.
The tenth grader was accused of attempted terrorist act (part 3 of article 30, part 1 of article 205 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation). According to investigators, on February 28, 2023, a teenager threw several Molotov cocktails at the door of the military enlistment office in Kirovsk.
The young man, as specified in the department, “could not complete his criminal intent due to circumstances beyond his control.” On the same day, the student was detained by the National Guard.
Initially, a criminal case was opened against the teenager for attempted intentional damage to property (part 2 of article 167 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation), after which he was reclassified in the UK as a case of a terrorist attack. Currently, the investigation is checking “the possible involvement of the accused in similar crimes.”
In Russia, since the beginning of the full-scale invasion of the Russian army into Ukraine, attempts have been made to set fire to more than 50 military registration and enlistment offices, including in Ryazan, Voronezh, Omsk, Rostov, Moscow, Ivanovo regions and Mordovia. Criminal cases were opened in several regions.
The Russian General Staff said that cases of arson of military registration and enlistment offices will be regarded as terrorist attacks and punished by up to 15 years in prison.
