The Minister of Institutional Relations of the government of Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT), Alexandre Padilha, confirmed that the PT will abdicate its own candidacy in the race for the Prefecture of São Paulo, in 2024, to support federal deputy Guilherme Boulos (PSOL- SP).

The minister stated that the decision also depends on the party’s desire to renew the policy. “The PT is the biggest party in Latin America and the main leftist party in the history of our country, it has the greatest popular leadership in that country and, in addition to President Lula, it has very important new cadres who will be in the politics of that country for many years to come. , but it doesn’t have to be unique. I have no doubt that a party like the PT, which wants to transform the country, has to have renewal as its central target all the time, to make room for young people.”
In March 2022, when he was still campaigning for the presidency of the Republic, Lula had already signaled with the hypothesis, in a speech during an event of the Movement of Homeless Workers (MTST). “We have to be aware that we have to make the Presidency of the Republic, the government of São Paulo, and in 2024 we are going to make Boulos mayor of São Paulo.”
At the time of the declaration, Fernando Haddad was a pre-candidate of the PT for the government of São Paulo. The petista was defeated in the second round by Tarcísio de Freitas (Republicans), who had 55.27% of the São Paulo votes.
Reflections of 2022
Boulos’s candidacy will represent an unprecedented alliance between PT and PSOL in the dispute for mayor of São Paulo. This configuration began to be designed behind the scenes of the 2022 elections.
To strengthen Haddad’s candidacy for the government of São Paulo, the PT negotiated for the PSOL to withdraw the candidacy of Boulos, who had also expressed his intention to run for the command of Palácio dos Bandeirantes and was appearing well in the polls.
Boulos agreed to change his candidacy for the government of São Paulo for a campaign for the Chamber of Deputies. On the other hand, he received from Lula the commitment that he would have the PT on his platform in the race for mayor of São Paulo.
