The PRC will develop its relations with Russia as “the world becomes more and more restless,” the new Chinese foreign minister said.
The new Chinese Foreign Minister Qin Gang today made extremely aggressive statements against the United States and spoke very warmly about Russia. In particular, official Beijing, for the first time since the start of a full-scale invasion of Ukraine, openly called the Russian Federation its main partner and set a “militant tone” towards Washington.
Threat to global security
Gan on Tuesday, March 7, gave the first press conference in his new role. Until recently, he was China’s ambassador to the United States, earning a reputation abroad as a cautious and experienced diplomat, according to CNN.
But during his speech today, he made an aggressive and sweeping rebuke to US policy, warning of the “catastrophic consequences” of what Gan called Washington’s “reckless gamble” in dealing with China.
“If the US does not put on the brakes and continue on the wrong path, no barriers can prevent the wagons from derailing and crashing, a confrontation is bound to arise,” the minister said.
In today’s “carefully crafted speech,” Gang, berating the United States for rising bilateral tensions, set the tone for China’s foreign policy for the coming year.
Note that ties between the two countries are at their worst in decades, and the Taiwan issue is far from the only reason for clashes. The parties are irreconcilable in matters of the Russian war against Ukraine, cybersecurity and world domination in the field of technology. Tensions peaked last month after a suspected Chinese spy balloon flew over North America and was then shot down by US fighters.
To this, during his speech, the new Chinese Foreign Minister accused the United States of overreacting, which, according to him, led to “a diplomatic crisis that could have been avoided.”
The incident, he said, shows that “the perception and views of the United States on China are seriously distorted.”
“They look at China as their main rival and the main geopolitical threat. This is comparable to when you fasten the first button wrong and the rest goes awry. As a result, US policy towards China has completely gone astray from a rational and sane track,” said the Chinese minister. .
Friendship with Russia
Gun also touched on the controversy over Russia’s war in Ukraine, accusing Washington of double standards. He stressed that the US has no right to reproach Beijing because it is arming Taiwan.
“Why does the US talk about respecting the sovereignty and territorial integrity on the Ukraine issue, but not respecting China’s sovereignty and territorial integrity on the Taiwan issue? Why is the US asking China not to supply weapons to Russia while continuing to sell weapons to Taiwan?” – said the head of the Chinese Foreign Ministry.
At the same time, he assured that Beijing does not provide weapons to either side.
“China did not create the crisis. It is not a party in crisis, and it has not supplied arms to either side,” Gang said.
In his speech, he also defended the close friendship between China and Russia. Gang said the ties between Beijing and Moscow “set an example for global international relations.”
“If China and Russia work together, the world will have a driving force. The more unstable the world becomes, the more important it is for China and Russia to steadily develop their relationship,” Gan told Al Jazeera.
He added that there are “close contacts” between the leadership of the two countries, and the relationship between the “heads of state” forms the basis of relations.
“Strategic partnership … will undoubtedly gain momentum,” the minister added.
At the same time, according to him, the interaction of the two countries is not aimed at any third party and “is not a threat to any country.”
Position regarding the war
Chinese head of state and party leader Xi Jinping made it clear during his speech on Monday that China views the war in Ukraine primarily from the point of view of confrontation with the United States.
“In particular, the Western countries, led by the United States, are conducting a comprehensive containment, encirclement and suppression of China, creating unprecedented serious problems for China’s development,” Xi told delegates to the Consultative Conference, an advisory body, during the annual session of the People’s Congress.
Xi has never heard such open, aggressive words against Washington before. Most of the time before that, he talks vaguely about “certain countries.”
