EU plans joint naval patrols
The European Commissioner for Environment and Oceans Virginius Sinkevičius and EU diplomat Josep Borrell are behind the plan.
The EU is considering the possibility of joint maritime patrols and naval exercises to combat Russian spy ships and protect critical maritime infrastructure. It is reported by the Financial Times.
It is noted that on Friday, March 10, an updated maritime strategy will be published, which includes an action plan calling for annual joint EU naval exercises and an increase in the number of military and coast guard patrols, while improving coordination between member countries.
It is reported that European Commissioner for Environment and Oceans Virginius Sinkevičius and EU diplomat Josep Borrell are behind the plan.
According to the European Commissioner, the strategy also includes strengthening satellite monitoring and intelligence sharing. In addition, the plan includes proposals for dealing with unexploded ordnance and mines at sea. The European Commissioner would like to create a special group to clean up the Black Sea after the war.
Sinkevičius also noted that the attack on the Nord Stream gas pipeline showed the need to increase vigilance regarding maritime activities in Europe.
EU member states have warned of growing evidence of Russian activity around offshore wind farms, oil and gas drilling platforms and telecommunications cables.
Earlier it was reported that Belgium is investigating the presence of a “spy ship” of the Russian Federation in the North Sea.
Recall that Swedish intelligence announced an increased threat from Russia.
